FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS
Two monumental works by Rachmaninoff side by side. The composer regarded his The Bells, a choral symphony, as one of his favorite compositions. Based on motifs from Edgar Allan Poe’s poem, this grand work in four movements describes the bells that mark the passage of life, from childhood to funeral processions.
The famous Dies Irae theme heard in the final movement of The Bells reappears in Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 3, his last symphony and a turning point in his artistic career, signalling a final break with the excesses of Romanticism and the birth of a mature composer. With the participation of the RTS Choir, the concert will be conducted by Gabriel Feltz – a renowned Rachmaninoff expert and recipient of the Sergei Rachmaninoff Foundation’s Prix Rachmaninoff.
